Green Commute
Green Cars
Driving a car that is considered clean or green will not only result in long-time reductions in fuel cost, but also result in lower emissions. Most cars that are dubbed green are actually hybrid cars. Hybrid cars use a technology that combines gas and electricity for power. Nearly every major car manufacturer currently has a hybrid car on the market or in the developing stages.
Carpools
Carpooling is another good way to reduce fuel costs and lower emissions. The Florida Department of Transportation (DOT) facilitates carpools through the provision of High Occupancy Vehicles (HOV) lanes. HOV lanes allow cars with two (2) or more passengers to travel in lanes that are generally less congested during peak hours.
Broward Transit
Broward County Transit (BCT) provides transportation services for 22 municipalities including the City of Tamarac. Nine (9) County bus routes currently service the City. Click to see Bus Routes from BCT.
Tamarac Transit
The City of Tamarac also operates a Community Bus Service. The RED route serves the eastern and a portion of central Tamarac on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays while the YELLOW route services the western and remaining portion of central Tamarac on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Bus fare is $.50 per one way trip. Click to see Bus Schedule.
Bikeways Study
The 2007 City of Tamarac Integrated Bikeway/Walkway System Feasibility Study was the first step towards establishing an integrated bikeway/walkway system providing safe connectivity between City facilities, schools, shopping areas, residential areas and Broward County’s Greenway. The feasibility study assessed current conditions, the practicality of implementing such a program and offered suggestions. The City of Tamarac is presently reviewing the findings of the feasibility study in hopes of designing a bikeway/walkway system that is safe and efficient for Tamarac residents.
Notwithstanding the establishment of a comprehensive bikeway/walkway system, the City provides for bicycle travel through the use of bike-lanes and wide paved shoulder areas. Pedestrian traffic is facilitated by sidewalks along all major roadways.
