Tamarac Social Services operates as an extension of the Parks and Recreation Department. Social Services provides assistance to residents in the City who have special needs. Social Services provides many services including information & referral, as well as, transportation services.
The Office of Social Services is located in the Tamarac Community Center, 8601 W. Commercial Boulevard.

FREE HEARING SCREENINGS |
|
Usually the first Wednesday of each month, at the Community Center 9:00-10:30 a.m. Please note that the hearing screenings will be cancelled for the month of June, July and August 2009. This service will resume Wednesday, October 7th.

SHINE Serving Health Insurance Needs of the Elderly |
The first and third Monday, and the second and fourth Friday of each month. This program assists seniors with their questions and concerns about their health insurance.

SENIOR SOCIAL & BAGEL BREAKFASTS |
The third Tuesday of each month at the Community Center. Lectures start at 10:00 a.m. Speakers are provided by the Coral Springs Medical Center. No appointment necessary. |
FREE BLOOD PRESSURE CHECKS |
Our blood pressure volunteer has left so until further notice we will not have the blood pressure screenings at the Tamarac Community Center. You may visit a local Walgreens or any Fire Department in Tamarac will also assist you. |
LOW VISION ASSISTANCE |
|
The Magnifying Center in Tamarac has donated a video magnifier for residents with low-vision. This magnifier aids anyone with low vision to read newspapers, documents, etc. This video magnifying machine is located in the Computer Room at the Tamarac Community Center.

ALZHEIMER'S SUPPORT GROUP |
Every first and third Monday of each month, at the Community Center beginning at 10:30 a.m. No appointment necessary. A 24-hour hotline is available: Alzheimer's Association, 1-800-272-3900

CONGREGATE MEAL SITE - LUNCH |
Served at 11:30 a.m. for seniors 60 and over and their spouses, for a suggested donation of $2.00 per person at the Community Center. Lunch is provided by Broward County Meals on Wheels. No income requirements in order to participate. You must reserve a meal no later than noon the prior business day by calling Patrick Massaquoi at (954) 724-2544, 9:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. |
BEREAVEMENT SUPPORT GROUP |
|
Every Monday, 10:00-11:30 a.m. The City of Tamarac is offering free bereavement guides, a resource book, to those residents who have lost a loved one. You can pick up a copy at the Community Center or at City Hall.

VETERAN'S ADVISOR |
Our Veteran's Advisor will be available every Friday, 8:00-11:00 a.m. No appointment necessary. Please note that the Veteran's Advisor will not be available during the months of July or August. |
OSTEOPOROSIS SCREENINGS |
The mobile van will be offering screenings the first Monday of each month, 9:00 a.m. to noon. Please call 1-800-257-0944 for an appointment. |
MAMMOVAN |
Mobile Mammography Screening provided by North Broward Hospital District. Most insurance is accepted. If insurance is unavailable, there will be a $58 fee to cover the cost. A Referral is recommended. No HMO taken.

SENIOR COPING SKILLS GROUP |
Every 2nd and 4th Tuesday of each month, from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

You may call the Information and Referral Specialist anytime you need information on Social Services programs that may be available in Broward County at (954) 597-3643.
In addition, there is a support group for those who have lost a love one. Every Monday at the Tamarac Community Center 10:00-11:30 a.m.

FREE TELEPHONE DISTRIBUTION PROGRAM |
Service provided the third Wednesday of each month from 10:00-11:00 a.m. Eligibility for specialized equipment to anyone who is a permanent resident of Florida who is deaf, hard of hearing, blind, or speech impaired. Bring proof of residency and eligible disability to: League for the Hard of Hearing, 2800 W. Oakland Blvd., Suite 306, Oakland Park, FL 33311, (954) 731-7200.

TRANSPORTATION SERVICES |
The City of Tamarac has a transportation program in place for residents with no other means of transportation. Transportation is provided to doctor's visits within the Tamarac city limits and transportation for grocery shopping/marketing is also available. Program is fee based.
