The City of Tamarac General Employees Pension Fund is a defined benefit pension plan. The City requires all general regular full-time employees to participate in the Pension Fund. The City makes a contribution to the Pension Fund in accordance with the requirements identified in the actuarial valuation, and employees are required to contribute 7% of their pay into the plan. Employees become vested when they have completed 5 years of continuous service. The Pension Plan provides benefits upon retirement, and includes provisions for disability benefits.
The City of Tamarac Firefighters’ Pension is a defined benefit pension plan. A participant is any individual employed by the City as a full-time firefighter as defined by the Florida Statutes. The City makes contributions to the Pension Fund in accordance with the requirements identified in the actuarial valuation, and employees are required to contribute 9% of their pay into the plan Employees become vested when they have completed 5 years of continuous service. The pension plan provides benefits upon retirement, and includes provisions for disability benefits.
The City of Tamarac Elected and Appointed Officers and Non-Represented Employees Retirement Plan is a defined benefit pension plan. Elected and appointed officials of the City, executive, managerial/professional and non-represented administrative employees employed by the City in a full-time capacity who are hired on or after October 1, 2005 are required to participate in the plan. The City makes contributions to the Pension Fund in accordance with the requirements identified in the actuarial valuation, and participants are required to contribute 10% of their pay into the plan. Employees become fully vested when they have completed 5 years of continuous service. The Pension Plan provides benefits upon retirement, and includes provisions for disability benefits.
The City offers a pre-tax deferred compensation plan. Each year employees can contribute the lesser of up to 100% of gross income (after subtracting any mandatory employee contributions to 401 qualified plans made with pre-tax dollars) or the standard contribution limit ($15,500 for 2008). The “Age 50” catch-up provision allows employees to contribute an additional annual amount when reaching age 50 or older (additional $5,000, for a total limit of $20,500 for 2008). The City offers group health insurance for regular, full-time employees through Aetna US Healthcare. Three programs are currently offered: HMO, QPOS and PPO. The HMO and QPOS plans include vision coverage. The City pays for a significant portion of the premium for individual and family health insurance coverage. A stand-alone dental program is also offered through Aetna US Healthcare. The City’s contribution toward dental insurance varies based on the position. Visit www.aetna.com.
Eligible regular, full-time employees who opt out of the City’s Health Insurance program may elect to participate in the Insurance Waiver Program. The City reimburses the employee for a portion of the premium if the employee chooses to obtain his or her own health insurance.
The City provides a confidential Employee Assistance Program (EAP) to help employees and their dependents. The pre-paid benefit offers confidential, professional counseling to assist employees with personal or family issues. Visit www.magellanhealth.com.
A group term policy for basic life and accidental death and dismemberment is provided at no cost to the employees.
The City makes a strong commitment to continuing education and invests in its employees through its Education Assistance Program. This program is designed to assist eligible City employees in achieving educational goals that are mutually beneficial to the City and the employee.
The City observes and compensates employees for 11 holidays per year.
Personal and/or vacation leave is provided to regular full-time and part-time employees, and accrues based on the employee’s position and years of City service.
Sick leave is provided to regular full-time and part-time employees, and accrues based on the employee’s position and years of City service.

The City offers two flexible spending accounts:
The Medical Reimbursement Plan is a pre-tax reimbursement program for qualifying medical care expenses. Employees may elect to participate in this plan by designating up to $4,000 per calendar year on a pre-tax basis for qualifying medical expenses.
The Dependent Care Assistance Plan is a pre-tax reimbursement program for qualifying dependent care expenses. Participants are eligible to set aside up to $5,000 per calendar year on a pre-tax basis for qualifying expenses.
Some regular employees are eligible to receive a benefit option package to help offset the cost of insurance, medical or dependent care expenses or other ancillary benefit costs otherwise paid by employees.
Some regular employees are eligible to purchase ancillary benefit products that complement the core benefits provided by the City. These products include short term disability, accidental, cancer, intensive care, hospitalization, critical illness and supplemental whole life insurance.
