Terrorism Prevention for the Community

September 11, 2001 will be a day not soon forgotten in the minds of every American and people all over the world. Our way of life has changed. We should never forget that America stands for "The Land of the Free. Home of the Brave."

On this page you will find tips to better protect yourself from becoming a victim, what to look for and how to protect yourself. Terrorism has many different faces, some of those will be addressed below.

What You Can Do!

What you can do as a Citizen:

American Citizens are partners of the Federal Government and Local Goverment. Your eyes and ears are the first line of defense. Please take your job seriously!

WHILE IN THE COMMUNITY:

Know what is NORMAL for your neighborhood, your work place, your everyday environment.

Be alert and report any suspicious persons, statements, packages that are not the NORM for your environment.

Be aware of the Homeland Security Warnings. See our Homeland Security Link.

WHILE TRAVELING:

Take precautions when leaving your home.

Be alert of your immediate surroundings when traveling.

NEVER accept packages from strangers at the airport, train or bus station.

Never leave your baggage unattended.

Do not carry any items that could be construed as weapons.

Be aware of unusual situations and behaviors.

YOUR WORK PLACE:

Know your surroundings.

Know where each EXIT is located.

Plan on your way out should there be an emergency in your work place.

Be prepared to help other people who may require assistance.

Periodically check fire extinguishers for required maintnance. Learn to use the Fire Extinguisher!

Have an Emergency Kit available. A battery operated radio, flashlight, extra batteries and food and water should be included.

IDENTITY THEFT:

Identity theft is a growing trend in America today. Terrorists have not let this avenue go unnoticed, they have assumed others identities and stolen personal information.

Take precautions. Keep personal information confidential.

If you are asked for personal information and you have a chance to "Opt-Out" - do so.

Monitor incoming and outgoing mail.

Ex:If you recieve a credit card that you did not request and have never done business with that company, look into the matter. Call the credit card company, close the account. Looking into your credit report may be a good idea at that time.

Also make a police report, this helps to protect you.

If you are expecting a credit card and it does not arrive - contact that company.

Arrange for and pick up new checks from your bank.

Only carry the cards that you use on a consistent basis.

Shred bank and personal documents.

Cut up expired and unused cards.

Diligently protect your social security number, Driver's License and other pertinent items.

NEVER place your Social Security Number on a personal check.

WHY A TERRORIST SELECTS A TARGET:

Will an assault upon the prospective target have the desired degree of impact upon it's victims and the watching world?

Will it have such an effect that will change an entire industry?
