Tamarac Fire Rescue

Clinical Competition Team

Tamarac Fire Rescue competes annually in the ALS State Paramedic Competitions at various locations throughout the State. Tamarac has enjoyed success in these events and places well in these competitions against teams from around the State.

During the competitions, a typical scenario would be a simulation of a man having chest pains while enjoying a day at the casino. At the same time, two robbers come in and shoot a security guard and take the team leader hostage. While two members treat the chest pain patient and the security guard, the FBI(actual Miami FBI SWAT Team Members) come in and secure the two robbers. All of this excitement scares a mother-to-be into delivering a newborn at the casino and the two team members begin treating those patients as the Security Guard is 'killed' by the robbers. At one point in the scenario, an off duty police officer tried to slip his gun to one of the medics and told them to take the robbers out. If the team member tried this, they would have been immediately killed and only one team member would have been left to treat all of the patients. None of our Rescue members fell for this trick, and the off-duty officer was told to kill them himself if he wanted to. Our team stayed focused and walked away with top honors for their participation in this event.

Another scenario at a recent competition included two skydivers who fell into some trees. One of the skydivers was tandem jumping and his partner was killed instantly. Both skydivers were hanging from their chutes and had to be properly released and treated. One minute into the scenario, the nine-month pregnant wife of one of the divers came running up. She recently had leg surgery and developed inflammation and infection in her leg, where a clot was dislodged and went to her lungs. She developed extreme shortness of breath and needed immediate treatment. A skydiving employee on the ground, meanwhile, developed severe medical problems and needed immediate attention. The team had to evaluate and treat 5 patients in 15 minutes.

During recent events in the State of Florida, Tamarac Fire Rescue has both won and placed in their competitions. We are proud of our team and pleased to be able to demonstrate the skills and knowledge that are indicative of the capability of all members of the Department.
